Summary of Programs

The  Sausalito Foundation is proud of our 65 years of support for Sausalito!


1960

  • The Sausalito Foundation was formed by residents to purchase two city blocks of underwater property at Shelter Cove and to deed them to the City of Sausalito. The purchased lots have preserved forever the view of San Francisco and the Bay from Bridgeway.

1966

  • Sea Lion Sculpture, cast in bronze, by local sculptor Al Sybrian. On Bridgeway, southern Sausalito waterfront. Agreement with the artist to produce replicas to
    support art in Sausalito.

1968 – Present

  • The Art Collection in City Hall. Ongoing acquisition and archival presentation of works by Sausalito artists and of Sausalito subjects, supported by the sale of Sea Lion Sculpture replicas cast by Heath Ceramics.

1975

  • Purchased sod for the original Dunphy Park.

1976

  • Restoration of the Vina del Mar Fountain, originally created for the San Francisco Pan Pacific Exposition, in honor of the nation’s bicentennial. Located in
    Vina del Mar Park, named for Sausalito’s first Sister City, which is in Chile.

1977

  • Refurbishing of MLK playground, soccer field, and track at the former elementary school, northern Sausalito.

1979

  • Contribution to par course construction at MLK.

1981

  • Tots’ slide purchased for local playground.

1985

  • Sally Stanford Drinking Fountain and Leland Fountain for dogs. Downtown Ferry Landing. Named for the inimitable mayor of Sausalito and her dog, Leland.

1987

  • Whale & Pelican metal bas-relief, Robin Sweeny Park, City Hall. Joint project of Foundation and Chamber of Commerce.

1989

  • Purchase of drinking fountains for several city parks.

1994

  • Bolinar (close to the wind) sculpture by local artist John Libberton, with landscaping by David Schwartz. Commissioned by Foundation and Friends of the Festival for the City’s centennial. At Napa Street and Bridgeway, near Dunphy Park. Donor’s names are displayed on donated Heath Ceramic bricks. 

2001 – Present

  • Contributions to various civic improvement projects. Non-profit fiscal agent for neighborhood improvement projects. 

2003

  • Elephant sculptures and fountain from Pan Pacific Exposition restored for third time. Vina del Mar Park, central Sausalito.

2005

  • Historic lights restored on public steps by Tiffany Park on Bridgeway, across from the Sea Lion sculpture.

2012

  • Ice House Plaza project begun, downtown on Bridgeway at Bay Street.

2017

  • Painting by William W. Kirsch and photograph by Walter Van Voorhees added to the Foundation’s collection of works by Sausalito artists, exhibited in City Hall.

  • Celebration of Jean Varda: Costume and musical event in Marinship Park, Sausalito, saluting the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love.

  • Photograph of the San Rafael Ferry by Bruce Forrester added to the Foundation’s collection of art works by local artists. On exhibit in City Hall.

2019

  • Completion of Ice House Plaza, a joint project with Sausalito Historical Society. Providing benches and items of historic interest in a landscaped setting in central downtown. 

2016 – 2024

  • Restoration of large outdoor mosaic designed by Jean Varda, executed by Alfonso Pardinas. Marinship Park, next to the Bay Model, on the Sausalito waterfront. 

2020 – 2024

  • Tunnel Art Project: Colorfully outlined handprints of Sausalito and Marin City children have been artistically displayed on the walls of the tunnel under Highway 101 linking the two communities. The Foundation joined with three other community groups to sponsor this important project.

2023 – 2024

  • Save our Sea Lion Campaign:  In 2023, storm waves toppled Al Sybrian’s iconic bronze sea lion statue. The Foundation worked with the City of Sausalito and other valued partners to help raise money to repair and restore the structure to its original seaside perch.

2023 – 2024

  • Created a virtual tour of our Sausalito Art Gallery. 36 rare pieces of art work were digitized and loaded on this application.
